When asked how much he would be worth if he hadn’t given away so much, Publix founder Mr. George responded with a humble, “Probably nothing.” Mr. George loved serving communities, and his legacy lives on as Publix associates do the same today through corporate and local campaigns.
Besides top notch service and competitive prices, Publix is equally passionate about the communities they serve. Concentrating on organizations that focus on youth, education, reducing hunger, and alleviating homelessness is what makes United Way such a great partner. General Manager Alex Starling and Employee Campaign Coordinator Risa Goodman go above and beyond each year to make sure employees understand the impact and importance of investing in the community.
“Since Publix opened in our community, they immediately entered our top five company campaigns in the region and have consistently remained in the top 7, an extraordinary feat when compared to some of the sizable companies in town,” recalls President and CEO of United Way of the Ocoee Region, Matt Ryerson.
Last year, Publix associates pledged nearly $30,000 to United Way. This was matched by a $20,700 gift from Publix Charities for a combined donation over $50,000. From volunteer days and agency tours to running an employee campaign, giving back is part of the Publix culture.
It’s no surprise that the caring individuals who personally walk you to a product you’re seeking or cheerfully greet you in the checkout line are the same people who make our local United Way donation campaign such a success.
