The Power of Showing Up: How Volunteering Strengthens Communities
Every year, hundreds of people across the Ocoee Region step away from their desks, routines, and responsibilities for a few hours to participate in United Way of the Ocoee Region's Day of Action. Together, they paint buildings, improve playgrounds, organize supplies, complete maintenance projects, and support local nonprofits working to meet community needs.
The immediate results are easy to see. A school gets a fresh coat of paint. A nonprofit gains extra capacity. A project that has been sitting on a wish list for months finally gets completed.
But the true impact of volunteering extends far beyond the work accomplished in a single day.
Volunteering Is Making a Comeback
Across the United States, volunteering is experiencing a resurgence. According to research from the U.S. Census Bureau and AmeriCorps, more than 75.7 million Americans volunteered through an organization last year, representing 28.3% of the population age 16 and older. That's a significant increase from the previous year and one of the largest rebounds in volunteer participation ever recorded.
Here in Tennessee, the trend is even stronger. More than one-third of Tennesseans participated in formal volunteer activities during that same period, leading the Southeast in volunteer engagement.
The message is clear: people want to be part of something bigger than themselves.
Volunteering Strengthens Communities
When volunteers come together, communities become more resilient.
Organizations gain resources they might not otherwise have. Nonprofits can direct more time and funding toward their missions instead of maintenance projects. Community partnerships are strengthened. New relationships are formed.
Research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that strong social connections help communities thrive, improve well-being, and encourage people to give back to their neighborhoods. Communities with stronger connections are often healthier, safer, and more resilient in the face of challenges.
Events like Day of Action create those connections. Volunteers meet people they might never have crossed paths with otherwise. Businesses collaborate with nonprofits and schools. Community members see firsthand the needs - and the opportunities - that exist right in their own backyard.
Volunteering Benefits the Volunteer, Too
While volunteering is often viewed as something we do for others, research consistently shows that it benefits those who serve as well. People who volunteer frequently report greater feelings of purpose, stronger social connections, and improved mental well-being. Studies have found that volunteering can help reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness while increasing overall life satisfaction.
For many participants, Day of Action becomes more than a one-time event. It becomes an introduction to causes they care about and organizations they continue supporting throughout the year.
The Value of Giving Time
Volunteer service creates measurable economic value, too. Independent Sector and the Do Good Institute estimate that the national value of one volunteer hour is approximately $34.79, illustrating the significant contribution volunteers make to communities across the country.
Last year alone, Day of Action volunteers contributed more than 1,960 service hours across 28 project sites throughout the Ocoee Region. With more than 490 volunteers participating, the event generated an estimated $68,000 in community value in a single day. Those numbers tell an impressive story. But the impact goes beyond dollars and hours. The real value lies in stronger nonprofits, improved community spaces, and neighbors working together toward a common goal.
One Day Can Make a Difference
It's easy to assume meaningful change requires years of effort. Sometimes it does. But sometimes meaningful change starts with one morning, one project, and one decision to show up.
That's what makes Day of Action so powerful.
When hundreds of people unite around a shared purpose, they demonstrate what's possible when a community chooses action over apathy and service over spectatorship. Whether you're a first-time volunteer or a longtime supporter, your time matters. Your skills matter. Your willingness to help matters. Because when we work together, we build more than stronger nonprofits, we build a stronger Ocoee Region.

Your Gift Creates Real, Local Impact

United Way’s community-wide approach allows one donation to support multiple solutions, helping individuals move from crisis to stability and ultimately toward self-sufficiency.
Accountability You Can Trust
United Way is committed to transparency and responsible stewardship. Local volunteers - many of them donors themselves - help guide funding decisions, ensuring community investments are thoughtful, strategic, and aligned with real needs. You can feel confident knowing your gift is making a measurable difference.

What Happens When Housing Comes with Support?
By Naette Yoko Lee (United Way Worldwide - Impact Story)

Reggie and Cristy's Story
Reggie carefully hung his interview clothes on a makeshift hanger inside their tent. The outfit (a button-down shirt and slacks he picked out at The Caring Place) represented everything he was fighting for. He couldn't afford to let them wrinkle, when this job might change everything.
For years, he and Cristy had been living on the margins. Addiction had deprived them of jobs, stability, and a place to call home. Basic things like hot meals or a safe place to sleep felt impossibly out of reach.
Then they found United Way of the Ocoee Region's Housing United program that offered more than a roof over their heads. The program, run in partnership with The Caring Place, connected them with case managers who stuck around, a housing navigator who knew the housing market, and a real plan for long-term stability.
Through Housing United, Reggie was connected with the Cleveland Lions Club, which helped him get a new pair of glasses. It was the first time in years he could see clearly. He landed that job. Karis Community Health provided the dental care Cristy needed. After many years of being ashamed to open her mouth, she started smiling again. That confidence carried her all the way to a shift lead position at Whirlpool and reignited a dream of becoming a social worker. The Housing Navigator at United Way identified a new landlord partner who gave them the opportunity to fulfill a long-time dream of a stable place they got to call home.
Nearly four years later, they're still in their home and about to celebrate five years of sobriety. Reggie has a stable job and Cristy is serving as an AmeriCorps VISTA with a United Way partner. She’s about to graduate with her bachelor's degree in social work. Together, they are building the future they once thought was impossible.
United Way understands that housing and health aren't separate issues and finds creative ways to address them together. Through partnerships with organizations like Karis Community Health, The Caring Place, and direct service programming, United Way supports neighbors like Reggie and Cristy as they move from crisis to stability.
